Jaipur consumer rights activist receives international award

A Jaipur-based consumer rights crusader has been awarded the prestigious Rhoda Karpatkin International Consumer award by the American Council on Consumer Interests for 2013.

George Cheriyan, Director of Jaipur based Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS), was chosen for the award in view of his contribution to the welfare of consumers on the international level.

He received the award recently at the annual conference of the ACCI held in Portland, Oregon, USA.

Mr. Cheriyan also delivered the Rhoda Karpatkin International lecture on “Consumer Protection Regimes around the world with special reference to the state of the Indian consumer”

CUTS is an international consumer organisation established in 1983 and presently working in more than 30 countries. Mr. Cheriyan has been heading the CUTS Centre for Consumer Action, Research & Training (CUTS CART), since 2003.

Mr. Cheriyan, originally from Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, is also a member of the Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC), under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs , of the International Expert group on financial services of Consumers International (London) and of several other policy making bodies and committees.

The ACCI, established in 1953, is a leading consumer rights organisation in the U.S. and is a forum for academics and other professionals involved in consumer and family economics.
