George Cheriyan, Director of Jaipur based Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS), was recognised as the Rhoda Karpatkin International Consumer Fellow for 2013 for his significant contributions to the welfare of consumers on the international stage.
Cheriyan was felicitated as an internationally renowned consumer leader, at the annual conference of American Council on Consumer Interests(ACCI) held in Portland, Oregon,USA, a CUTS release said here today.
ACCI established in 1953, is a leading membership organization for academicians and other professionals involved in consumer and family economics.
During the occasion of receiving the award, George Cheriyan delivered the Rhoda Karpatkin International lecture on the topic ‘Consumer Protection Regimes around the World with Special Reference to the State of the Indian Consumer’
George is heading CUTS Centre for Consumer Action, Research & Training (CUTS CART), since 2003. CUTS is an Indian origin international consumer organisation established in 1983 and presently working in more than 30 countries.
George is a member of the Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs of Government of India, a member of International Expert group on financial services of Consumers International and member of several other policy making bodies and committees.
Rhoda Karpatkin Consumer International Award was established in 2005 to honour the pioneering work of Rhoda Karpatkin to enhance the welfare of consumers throughout the world. The award recognises those who have made significant contributions to the welfare of consumers on the international stage. From 1973 American Council on Consumer Interests (ACCI) have honoured worldwide scholars working on consumer protection issues.
Annually eleven categories of awards are granted to people.
Specialised lawyer in consumer and education law; Ms Rhoda is presently President Emeritus of Consumers Union (CU) of United States. She was the president of CU for 27 years from 1974 to 2001 and served two terms as President of Consumers International (CI).
Currently, Ms Karpatkin serves as a member of US President’s Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations and the Committee on Trade and Environmental Policy. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue. She is a member of various boards of several International Trade, Human Rights and Policy making organisations.
More than 100 researchers from all over United States and from ten other countries, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, and UK attended the conference.
George hails from Ayroor in Ranni Taluk of Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.
