Organic Farming is the Future of India: Prabhu Lal Saini

“Organic farming is the need of the hour not only for consumers and producers but to save the Mother Earth as the use of chemicals in the soil has reduced the nutritional value tremendously”, said Prabhu Lal Saini, Agricultural Minister of Rajasthan while launching ProOrganic-Phase II Project of CUTS International to promote organic farming in the state of Rajasthan. The event witnessed the presence of Shri Rao Rajendra Singh, Deputy Speaker Rajasthan Legislative Assembly as the Guest of honour and Shri Prabhu Lal Saini, Agriculture Minister of Rajasthan as the Chief Guest.

Saini highlighted the initiatives taken by Government in the form of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) in which Rs 30,000 is proposed to be given to a farmer in 3 years to practice organic farming. He also mentioned about the initiatives taken by Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje in which an incentive of Rs 6/kg is being given to produce and export fruits, vegetables, flowers and Spices and also to include markets and shops in Mandis for organic products. The minister gave the example of Dungarpur district which will soon be declared as the first fully organic production district of Rajasthan.

Shri Rao Rajendra Singh praised the efforts of Rajasthan Government in introducing a culture of organic farming. He said that Quality of life depends on the input that goes into it and it forms the foundation of human being. He stressed that roadmap should be prepared to increase the income of the famers and incentivize them along with changing their mindset to turn them in favour of organic farming.

Mr. George Cheriyan, Director CUTS International while delivering the opening remarks emphasized on expanding horizon of organic farming and advocated the use of sustainable consumption which includes improvement in the quality of life by using less natural resources, pollutants and waste and helping the next generation to have better life. He also spoke about the work of CUTS in phase I of the project from 2013-17 which covered 6 Districts and its expansion in 4 more districts in the phase-II for next four years.

Rajdeep Pareek, Project Officer, CUTS gave a detailed presentation about the objectives and activities to be covered in the project. Deepak Saxena, Assistant Director of CUTS gave the welcome address and explained about the project in brief. The project is aimed to cover 10 Districts, 96 blocks and 192 gram panchayats. The focus of the project is to promote domestic consumption of organic products and bringing their price at par with presently available non-organic products in the market.

Many other eminent personalities like Shri Vikas Sitaram Bhale, Commissioner, Agriculture, Government of Rajasthan; Dr. Sheetal Sharma, Director SIAM; Dr. Hema Yadav, Director, NIAM; Dr. Kanika Varma, Associate professor, Dept. of Home Science, Rajasthan university and Shri P L Patel, Theme Leader Vaagdhara Sansthan, Banswara were also part of the project launch as Special Guests speakers.
