Green Action Week (GAW) is a global campaign to promote sustainable consumption. It is an initiative by the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) and carried out in coordination with Consumers International (CI). The theme for CUTS GAW 2023 campaign is ‘Best out of Waste’ which will focus on addressing the single use plastic issue and other waste generated at household level. Consumption patterns have changed drastically in recent years resulting in unsustainable lifestyles. Wide scale use of plastic items is causing a big environmental issue in India. Governments have taken many efforts to tackle this and related menaces however no significant outcome could be achieved till now. Recently, India has banned the manufacturing, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic items, having low utility and high littering potential with effect from July 1, 2022. Under the campaign, identified communities of Jaipur City with a focus on women and low-income groups will be targeted and will be provided training to recycle and reuse plastic waste and community level consultations will be organised.
Campaign would help change the habits of community members, which would lead to Sustainable Consumption Practices through community sharing. A local platform will be formed for sharing responsibility of reducing the single use plastic items including plastic carry bags and ensure that alternatives are promoted and consumables & perishable are packed in refills brought from home. Community and decision makers will be involved in the Sharing Community Concept, exploring ways within their community, to resolve them in the changing world.
