George Cheriyan, Director of Jaipur based consumer advocacy group Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) is re-nominated to the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for a period of 3 years, as a member from the consumer segment. This is the 3rd time that CUTS is getting nominated to CAC of FSSAI. George represented CUTS in the CAC during 2014-19.
Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) is an Indian origin international public policy research and consumer advocacy organisation established in 1983, pursuing social justice and economic equity both within and across borders. Regulatory interventions on food safety and standards, is one of key areas of work of CUTS.
He was also a member of the Food Authority (FSSAI) during 2021-22.
George was actively involved in the Eat Right India campaign and also in the campaign to eliminate industrially produced trans-fat from India. As per FSSAI notification, trans-fat is banned in all foods, oils and fats with effect from Jan. 1, 2022 in India.
At present, George is spearheading the campaign for an effective front of the Pack Labelling (FoPL) warning label and a member of Stakeholders Group on of FSSAI, since 2021.
Presently George is also a member of Food Hygiene, Safety Management and Other Systems Sectional Committee (FAD15) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
George is a member of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), since 2007. George represented CUTS in the Council of Consumers International (CI), a global voice of consumers, headquartered in London, during 2015-19. George received the prestigious Rhoda Karpatkin International Consumer Award for 2013 for significant contributions to the welfare of consumers on the international stage as an internationally renowned consumer leader.
He has published a number of articles on the issues related to food safety in the leading national news dailies, news magazines, journals, periodicals etc.
